Many Waters, One Gathering Place

Lee Anne Washington Human beings have always gathered where water flows—at wells, rivers, fountains, and shorelines—to drink, trade stories, meet neighbors, and build community. Each year at Water Communion, we bring water from the many communities in which we live and pour it into one common bowl, reminding us that although we come from different places and different lives, here our paths meet. What Might I Be Missing?

Lee Anne Washington Experience teaches us a great deal, but it can also tempt us to believe that we already know what something means, how another person thinks, or what will happen next. The Buddhist practice of beginner’s mind invites us to approach even the familiar with renewed attention and wonder. This Sunday, we will consider the humility—and maturity—it takes to ask, “What might I be missing?”
